Not sure what to make of it.

STR matches are not reliable if being distant. I even get E-M34 STR matches, even though I'm under E-V13.
Those are however mostly from Danubian-Balkan-derived (central V13 group) branches, like https://www.yfull.com/tree/E-FT250618/ That one is under E-L618 (not even V13): https://www.yfull.com/tree/E-A35813/ Another E-V13 branch: https://www.yfull.com/tree/E-FT142653/ As you can see if looking at those 3 branches alone, they are pretty much unrelated other than being L618/V13 respectively. I have many Middle Eastern distant STR matches on YFull as well, but none of them are really close to my branch (no common ancestor in the last 2.600 years). It means nothing. At FTDNA, Near/Middle Eastern matches are mostly restricted to 12 markers and disappear at 25 onwards.

I guess there might be instances in which they could be useful, like if a couple of cousins make an upload and are not sure about their exact relationship, with no new SNP's discovered by YFull. In such cases the STR's might provide additional lines of evidence to differentiate the branching of the lineages. And its kind of tradition, since the data being provided anyway. |
